Top 15 Activities to do During Quarantine – Moosmosis
In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, many people have been forced to quarantine themselves in their homes. Although countries are starting to open and people are exiting quarantine, social distancing is still common and previously planned summer activities such as trips, internships and summer jobs have been postponed or cancelled. With summer having arrived, students will no longer be distracted by their classes. This raises the question, what can we do over a quarantined summer?
Reading helps you grow and learn new things. It reduces stress by allowing you to immerse yourself in a different world. It improves your concentration, focus, and emotional health. It enhances your memory and your creativity.
A common excuse for not reading is the lack of time in one’s day to day routine. Use the added time to read a novel, short story, poem, or any other form of literature that interests you.
Don’t limit yourself to merely reading, write as well. You will probably need to be a decent writer in order to do great at school, college and your job. Writing helps you entertain others as well as yourself and will enhance your communication skills.
Put that idea you have on paper. Express your regrets and emotions in a poem and your wildest dreams in a novel or short story. Don’t worry about it being good or bad, after all, you don’t have to show it to anyone, and practice makes perfect! However, if you like, you can enter online writing contests and potentially win prizes. Additionally, you can start a blog or try to get your work published.
Now is the perfect time to try new recipes and enhance your cooking skills. Cooking can be an entertaining activity and if done with your family, it can be a perfect bonding experience. Furthermore, knowing how to cook helps you meet nutrition guidelines and might help you save money.
There is always something that needs to be cleaned. Take the time to sweep and mop the house, to clean the windows and dust your shelves. Organize your room and your house and figure out what you use and don’t; donate or throw out what you don’t use.
Now is the perfect time to study for standardized tests such as the SAT, ACT, MCAT, IB, etc. Although many standardized tests have been cancelled for the time being, there will most likely be an opportunity for you to take them in the fall – weather online or in person – so make sure you are prepared.
Learn a new language
Have you ever wanted to learn a new language but not had enough time to do so? Use the time to learn or practice a new language. You can use Duolingo to do this.
Enter an online course
There are plenty of online courses out there for any level. Use cites such as edx to get access to free college level courses from IVY league colleges. Although in many cases you won’t get credit for them, this is the perfect time to explore your passion and learn new things.
Learn something on Youtube
You aren’t constrained to formal IVY League and other prestigious university’s courses. Learn something new on YouTube. Whether it be learning how to cut your hair or how to play the piano, take the time you have to learn a new skill.
Drawing allows you to express your emotions and improves your hand-eye coordination. It enhances your creativity and may be useful in your job. It stimulates your brain and it can be enjoyable. Use your extra time to learn how to draw, or if you already know how to draw, master it!
You don’t have to be a kid to take part in crafts! Performing crafts can help relax you and can be very enjoyable.
Some ideas of crafts are:
- Decorate your shoes
- Decorate your COVD-19 mask!
- Make a density column
- Paint your trash can
Reflect and pray
Take the time to reflect on your life and whether you have lived correctly. Reflecting is crucial to improve yourself and your situation If you are religious, you might want to pray and improve your knowledge on your faith.
Stay in shape! Watch YouTube videos of possible workouts or get a session with a trainer (you can do this online). If you are able to, go to the park for a walk or a run – respecting social distancing.
Not every second of your time needs to be dedicated to doing something productive. Take a moment to watch a TV show or a movie that you will enjoy.
Help your community and the world by taking part in remote volunteering. You can tutor kids, help translate content to a different language, or perform some research.
Furthermore, if you are able to and willing to do so, you can consider being part of the frontlines and provide in person assistance to organizations such as the Food Bank.
Do something crazy with your hair
- Grow a beard: to all the men out there, quarantine is the best moment to figure out weather you look good with a beard
- Cut your hair short: to all those people who have been curious about how you look with short hair or completely bald, now is the perfect time!
